PrismaFlow™ : Up to 100km pipeline monitoring, record length of intrusion and leakage detection

We demonstrate a record length of distributed acoustic fiber sensing (DAS) for pipeline monitoring. Both intrusion (third party interference) and leakage can be detected. An ultra-sensitive architecture enables record length (100km for a single-ended fiber sensing system or 200 km for sensing from both ends) detection while advanced classification capabilities minimize both false and nuisance alarms. Targets are localized (high resolution of few meters) and classified.


While conventional DAS fiber sensing is limited to 20-50km, increasing the effective range to 100 km can significantly decrease the number of systems and number of stations needed for long-range pipeline monitoring. This increase is obtained with the breakthrough Hyper-Scan Fiber Sensing™ technology which offers 100x greater sensitivity.

Prisma Photonics has set a world record in pipeline leak detection using ultra-sensitive fiber-optic sensing.


In order to demonstrate the performance of the PrismaFlow™ leak detection system, we have designed and built an innovative test field for leak simulation. Using this versatile test field, we were able to test and demonstrate the superior leak detection capabilities of PrismaFlow™, detecting gas leaks down to below 200 standard liters per minute (SLPM), corresponding to 0.002% of typical pipeline flow (500MMcf/Day), when using a setup of a standard optical cable buried inside a conduit at a distance of 0.5 m from the pipe. This corresponds to 2 orders of magnitude improvement vs. alternative fiber-optic sensing systems, and without relying on momentary and transient effects such as a negative pressure pulse.

PrismaFlow™ : Zeroing false alarm rates

Prisma Photonics pipeline monitoring system, PrismaFlow™, uses its novel Hyper-Scan Fiber-Sensing™, an ultra-sensitive sensing capability to generate data with a very high signal to noise ratio (SNR), even when using pre-deployed fiber-optic cables. Advanced machine learning capabilities harnessed together with the high data SNR enables the extraction of a large set of features that assist, for example, in differentiating background noises from digging activities that endanger the pipeline. These features enable the construction of novel real-time algorithms for the classification of different activities, leading to a dramatic decrease in the false and nuisance alarm rate.
